Understanding Semco Teak Sealer

Semco offers two primary teak sealer options: Natural teak sealer, Cleartone teak sealer and Honeytone teak sealer. The Natural formulation imparts a subtle warmth, the Cleartone option maintains the wood's original colour while the honeytone has a richer hue. All three sealers penetrate the teak, providing a durable, weather-resistant barrier against moisture, UV rays, and mildew.

Preparing Your Teak: The Foundation for Success

The preparation process varies depending on the condition of your teak.

1. Fresh Teak:

  • Weathering: Allow new teak to weather for 2-4 weeks to open up its pores and allow natural oils to surface. This step is crucial for optimal sealer penetration.
  • Cleaning: Gently clean the weathered teak with a mild soap and water solution, followed by a thorough rinse.

2. Sanded Teak:

  • Cleaning: Clean the sanded teak with a mild soap and water solution and allow it to dry completely.

3. Teak Restored with Semco Teak Cleaner:

  • Semco Teak Cleaner Application: Follow the instructions provided with the Semco teak cleaner. This involves applying the cleaner, scrubbing the teak, and rinsing thoroughly.
  • Drying: Allow the teak to dry completely, typically for 24-48 hours, depending on weather conditions.

Creating a Suitable Application Area

  • Ventilation: Work in a well-ventilated area to minimize exposure to sealer fumes. Outdoor application is ideal.
  • Protection: Cover surrounding surfaces with drop cloths or plastic sheeting to protect them from spills and overspray.
  • Weather Conditions: Apply the sealer on a dry, calm day with temperatures between 10°C and 32°C. Avoid applying when rain is expected.

  • Thin Coats: Apply thin, even coats of sealer, following the wood grain. Avoid applying thick coats, which can lead to uneven drying and peeling.
  • Overlap: Slightly overlap each stroke to ensure complete coverage.
  • Drying Time: Allow the sealer to dry completely between coats, as recommended by the manufacturer. Typically, 2 coats are sufficient.

Cleaning Up
